
The three components of OEE
Availability = run time ÷ planned production time. It shows the share of planned time lost to stops.
Performance = (ideal cycle time × total count) ÷ run time. It compares actual speed with a consistent reference for the product and equipment.
Quality = good count ÷ total count. It represents the share of production meeting the selected criteria.
OEE = availability × performance × quality. Use decimal ratios for the calculation, then express the result as a percentage.
A worked example
Fictional example: a machine runs for 420 of 480 planned minutes. It produces 400 parts with an ideal cycle time of 1 minute, of which 380 are good.
Availability: 420 ÷ 480 = 87.5%. Performance: 400 ÷ 420 ≈ 95.2%. Quality: 380 ÷ 400 = 95%. OEE is about 79.2%. It is lower than availability because it also accounts for speed and quality.
Validate data before comparing
Specify break treatment, counting rules and the reference cycle time. A change in product or definition can make two periods difficult to compare.
- Planned production time and run time with the same scope.
- An ideal cycle time appropriate for product and equipment.
- Consistent total and good counts.
- Documented timestamps, units and exclusion rules.
Start with reliable indicators
If quality data or reference cycle time is missing, clearly show quantities, downtime and availability instead of presenting an incomplete OEE score.
